Giorgos Petkos
I am a PhD student at the Institute of Perception, Action and Behaviour
(IPAB) since Sep. 2004. My PhD project is co-supervised by
Dr. Sethu Vijayakumar and
Dr. Marc Toussaint and I am looking
at problems related to probabilistic context (and model) switching
for sensorimotor control. My work involves learning models of non-stationary dynamics and using them for control. I have a Bachelors degree from the Dept. of Applied
Informatics at the University of Macedonia (Greece, '02) and an
MSc in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Edinburgh
('03). My research interests include machine learning, probabilistic
inference and evolutionary methods. My PhD studies are funded by the Greek State Scholarships Foundation (IKY) |

Research projects
Project 1 (MSc Project): Applying machine learning techniques to ecological data This
project involved modeling carbon flux based on various meteorological
and physical measurements using machine learning techniques. Previous
models developed by biologists were simple parametric models. The main
challenge was the size of the initial data set. Thus, apart from actual
modeling, the main focus was on dealing with the size of the data set
to make actual modeling with costly methods feasible. A series of
heuristics (hill-climbing, genetic search, evolutionary strategies
etc.) were used for feature selection. The ultimate goal of the project
was to automatically identify the main factors that affect carbon flux. |
